Hand Labeled Map:

  • Print the PDF map template in color.
    • Using a pen hand label the map, do not just label the cities, but include other features.
    • Neatness does matter, so take your time regarding label placement, spelling, and legibility.

    • Write a two page history of the California Missions. Focus on the main topic you wish your map to be about.

This is the first step for creating your semester long project - a 24" x 18" map of the California Missions.

Draft map of California Missions:

  • From within ArcMap create a sketch map of California on letter size paper, with California Missions shown.
    • You will need to find or create the mission layer.
  • With pencil/pen show where other relevant information will be located on the page.
Write-up
  • On a separate piece of paper list of layers that you may want on the final map. 
    • Include where they may be found
  • What additional information will you show in the white spaces of the page?
  • What information about the missions will you highlight?

  1. Create two layouts from the same data
    • Download data for a European country of your choice from Natural Earth.
    • Create two unique maps using the exact same area, data, and symbology.

Map of your neighborhood:

  • Using data found online create a map of your neighborhood or area surrounding where you work.
    • Map should be letter size

Map Critique:

  • Write a critique of two static maps that are available online; one you feel shows good cartographic design and one that does not.
    • Explain the positives and negatives for each map.
    • Include a link to each map. If possible please shorten your links (a simple web search will find many free services to do this)
