Where 2.0 Conference Videos

E-mail Print PDF

O'Reilly's Where 2.0 Conference is going on right now and I found out that they are streaming live the keynote speakers. This has given me some great listening opportunities during my work day. They also are posting videos of the speakers on their website for viewing at a later date. I highly recommend going to their video page and viewing some.

placeSpotting

E-mail Print PDF

I have been a fan of placeSpotting for quite awhile (since 2008) and can spend too much time just solving these spatial riddles. This site is a simple Google Maps challenge game where one map has is focused on a specific spot on the earth and then your job is to zoom in to that specific location on another map. If you are fortunate enough, the creator of the spatial riddle will have provided you with a few hints. You can also create your own challenge for others to solve.

This site has many ways to access it including an iPhone App and a way to add it to an iGoogle page.

Go check it out and have fun.

The Real Underground

E-mail Print PDF

The Real Underground Morphing Map is a great animation that morphs the London Underground from the popular Beck map to the "Real" Underground map.

I found this site through one of my favorite blogs, The Map Room.

Tissot's Indicatrices

E-mail Print PDF

Two of the latest blog entries on Esri's Mapping Center site talk about the usefulness of Tissot's Indicatrices in understanding projection distortion (Tissot's indicatrix helps illustrate map projection distortion) and how to create them (Making of Tissot's Indicatrices). For anyone using GIS who struggles either understanding or teaching projections, I highly recommend reading these two.

Mapping a Disaster - Japan's Earthquake/Tsunami

E-mail Print PDF

Since March 11, 2011 I have been following the events in Japan through maps. Some maps have been poor and misleading (Nuclear Fallout Map, An Irresponsible Radiation Map), others have been informative (ESRI's Earthquake and Tsunami maps, ), and others just leave you breathless (Satellite Photos Before and After). All of them help paint a picture of the event. Combine them with the news reports, photos and videos and you can't help but be amazed.
